Do you know what it takes to drive your motorhome safely?

I do not own a motorhome but my job is driving safely.

Hi my name is Jim. I drive an over-the-road charter bus. I carry people and safety must my number one concern 100% of the time.

The motor coach I opperate is 45' long, 8'6" wide. There are 56 seats in my motor coach. That means I am responsible for their safety!

One day I was coming back from a extended tour, I had no passengers. I had been out for 8 days. I picked my passengers up in Albuquerque, NM., and had dropped them off at LAX in Los Angeles, CA., and was going home to Denver, CO.

I was north bound on I-15 in Utah. As I was coming up on a brand new motorhome. I noticed the driver was right on the center line. I slowed down, got over in the passing lane, hopping they would move over to the right.

As I coming up along side I noticed the gentleman that was driving had a death grip on the wheel and his eyes were as big as coffee cups. That started me wondering do the drivers of all these RV’s really know what they are doing? That gentleman on that day on I-15 in Utah did not.

Driving the family car compared to driving a motorhome is different, but not necessarily difficult. It can be dangerous if you are not familiar with these differences.

Your motorhome has many built in safety features. These features need to be checked for proper operation before you start your trip. These features for the most part are mechanical.

Can you do a proper PRE-TRIP of your RV?

1, What needs to be checked?

2, How do I check these features?

What is the dimensions of my RV?

1, How high is it?

2, How wide is it?

3, How long is it?

4, How much weight can it carry?

As a professional driver when you apply for a job that company dose not take your word for how much experience you have. They put you out in their equipment with an experienced driver and evaluate you on their equipment.

Some where in that process, of getting hired, you are given a written test. That test is mandated by The US Department of Transportation. That test deals with safety. You must pass with a score of 80% or better.

That day on I-15 in Utah started me thinking do the people that drive these RV’s have the resources to teach them how to drive safely.

I found very few driving schools for motorhome’s. I found a lot of truck driving schools. I even found a few bus driving schools.

That’s why I wrote an E-Book on driving a motorhome.
